Nonverbal Communication AAC Hoodie – Autism Communication Board “I Communicate Differently” Point-to-Communicate Hoodie A030
When spoken words aren’t available, communication still needs to be.
This Nonverbal Communication AAC Hoodie was created to provide nonverbal, minimally speaking, and differently communicating individuals with a practical way to express common needs, responses, boundaries, and sensory concerns right in the moment.
Rather than simply featuring an autism-themed graphic, the front of this hoodie functions as a wearable communication board. The wearer can look down, find what they need, and point directly to the appropriate word or symbol — providing another way to communicate without relying on speech.
The design reads “I COMMUNICATE DIFFERENTLY – I CAN POINT TO WHAT I NEED” and includes 16 quick-access communication choices:
YES • NO • I DON’T KNOW • HELP • STOP • DON’T TOUCH • SPACE • A BREAK • WATER • FOOD • BATHROOM • LEAVE • TOO LOUD • TOO BRIGHT • OVERLOADED • I’M HURT
A Communication Tool That Goes Wherever You Go
AAC devices, communication books, cards, and other communication tools can be incredibly important, but there are times when they may not be immediately accessible.
This hoodie provides an additional communication option that's already being worn.
Whether someone needs water, wants another person to stop, is experiencing sensory overload, needs help, or simply needs to get out of an environment, they can point to the corresponding option instead of having to find another way to explain it.
It can be especially useful during school, work, appointments, travel, shopping, community outings, crowded events, unfamiliar environments, or situations where speech becomes difficult or unavailable.
Why Are Some of the Symbols and Words Upside Down?
They're supposed to be.
This communication board was designed specifically around the perspective of the person wearing it.
Someone standing in front of the wearer sees the hoodie normally, but the wearer looks down at the board from the opposite direction. Because they're the person who actually needs to locate and point to the choices, portions of the design are intentionally oriented toward the wearer.
So if certain elements appear upside down when looking at the hoodie straight-on, that isn't a printing mistake or design error. It's part of what makes the graphic functional as a wearable communication tool.
Communication Is More Than Asking for Food or Water
One of the most important parts of this design is the variety of messages included.
YES, NO, and I DON’T KNOW provide quick responses to questions.
WATER, FOOD, and BATHROOM communicate common physical needs.
But the board also includes choices that can become especially important during stressful or overwhelming situations.
DON’T TOUCH and SPACE allow the wearer to communicate personal boundaries. TOO LOUD, TOO BRIGHT, and OVERLOADED can help identify sensory distress. A BREAK and LEAVE provide ways to communicate the need to step away from an environment.
And HELP and I’M HURT give the wearer direct ways to indicate when something is wrong.
The purpose isn't to replace a person's existing AAC system or preferred method of communication. Instead, it's designed to provide one more accessible communication option for moments when it may be useful.
